Herman Apfel Dies Following
Illness
Herman Apfel, who was friendly and popular and devoted much of his
time to young people and aiding children, died Thursday at St. Joseph’s
Hospital after a week’s illness. He was
51 years of age.
Mr. Apfel was born in New York
and moved to Memphis
twenty-eight years ago. He had been
manager of Ellan Hat Shop on main near Madison for over 20 years
before opening his own business, the Frances Hat Shop at the same address.
Mr. Apfel served as chairman of Gailor
Hall executive committee for a number of years and took a keep interest in Gailor throughout the years and a personal interest in the
welfare of many of the boys staying there.
He was also active in support of DeMolay and
of the work of the Girls’ Club, frequently contributing hats and bags for
distribution to the girls there.
He was a generous
contributor to Cynthia Milk Fund and many other projects.
Surviving are his
wife, Mrs. Katherine Apfel, two daughters, Gay and Wendye Apfel, of Memphis; his parents,
