Herman Katz Dies After Heart Attack
Herman Katz, who was
long identified as a leader in Jewish affairs and organizations of Memphis, passed away Friday evening at Baptist Hospital
six hours after suffering a heart attack.
Mr. Katz, who lived
at 893 North Evergreen, had been a resident of Memphis since 1914. He was born in Poland 69 years ago. He entered the grocery business at the time
he came to Memphis and continued in this
business until 1924 when he helped found Katz Brothers Auto Supply Co. at 2078 Monroe.
Mr. Katz was a
brilliant Hebrew scholar and was an active member of Anshei
Sphard Congregation and Baron Hirsch
Congregation. He was a life member of
Memphis Mizrachi organization and was a member of
B’nai B’rith.
Surviving are his
wife, Mrs. Sheva Katz; two sons, Alex Katz and Kolman
Katz, of Memphis; five daughters, Mrs.
Carl Weiss, Mrs. David Rosenberg, Mrs. Jake Elster
and Mrs. Leon Kriger, all of Memphis and Mrs. Martin Ovitsky, of Chicago;
sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Rabbi Morton S.
Baum and Rabbi Isadore Goodman officiated at services
held Monday at the family residence.
Interment was in Anshei Sphard Cemetery.
