A Good Citizen Passes On
Death closed the
career of a real American, when Barney Plough, soldier, businessman, and friend
of all humanity passed on in a local hospital after a long illness last Monday,
age 66.
Coming to Memphis at the age of three in the wake of the panic of
1892, he knew Memphis
as do few men. He was educated here and
went to work in his chosen field, pharmacy.
Barney Plough
possessed to a marked degree the ability to make and hold the friendship of his
fellow citize4ns. He won friends in all
walks of life and held their esteem and respect to the end. Millionaires, political leaders,
industrialists, and newsboys called him ”Barney.”
When Imperial
Germany got the idea it was bigger and more important than this Republic, Barney
Plough did not wait for the draft. He
was among the first five volunteers from Memphis. He fought with Pershing until Germany was
destroyed. His act in volunteering gives
you an insight into his love of country and its democratic institutions.
To Barney Plough
the private station was the post of honor.
An outstanding
citizen passed on when Barney Plough departed this life. We need more like him.
