Mrs. Alwina Powel Succumbs
Mrs. Alwina Loewenberg Powell, widow
of Sam Powell, died Thursday morning at Methodist Hospital
following an illness of four months.
Mrs. Powell was a
lifelong Memphian, who was born here 61 years ago, daughter of the late Johanna
and Ferd Loewenberg. Following her marriage to the late Mr.
Powell, she was away from Memphis for a time and
just before returning to Memphis made her home
in Denver, Colo.
She was recently
the manager of the 81 Madison Building, an active member of the Builders,
Owners and Managers Association and the Business and Professional Women’s club;
and of Temple Israel. She was very
active in civic and charity organizations of the city.
Mrs. Powell made
her home with her daughter, Mrs. David Grushkin, of
215 North Avalon.
Besides her
daughter, she is survived by her two grandsons, Alvin Joseph Grushkin, and Stephen David Grushkin; two brothers, I. G.
Loewenberg, of St. Louis
and William A. Loewenberg, of Memphis; and a sister, Mrs. Ira J. Lichterman,
of Memphis.
Dr. James A. Wax
officiated at services. Interment was in
Temple Israel Cemetery.
