Sam Wener Dies

 

Department Store Founder Dies At 74

 

   Sam Wener, Founder of Wener’s Department Store at 1086 Thomas, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Hospital.  Mr. Wener, who lived at 1072 Thomas, was 74.

   Born in Russia, Mr. Wener lived in New York City before moving to Memphis 50 years ago.  He established his department store in 1916.  Mr. Wener had been retired for 20 years.

   Mr. Wener was a member of the Baron Hirsch Congregation, the Maccabees and the Progressive Order of the West.

   Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at National Funeral Home, followed by services at Sam Abraham Memorial Chapel.  Rabbi Isadore Goodman officiated.  Burial was in Baron Hirsch Cemetery.

   Mr. Wener leaves his wife, Mrs. Ida Wener; two sons, Simon Wener and Harry Wener; a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Stern; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
